William Klein is a photographer and American film director. Although he was born in New York and educated at the City College of that city, Klein’s activity is mainly developed in France.
He has directed a large number of feature films, including the 1966 film Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo and the anti-American satire Mr. Freedom.
Klein trained as a painter, studying under Fernand Léger, and found early success with exhibitions of his work. He soon moved on to photography and achieved widespread fame as a fashion photographer for Vogue and for his photo essays on various cities. He has directed feature-length fiction films, numerous short and feature-length documentaries and has produced over 250 television commercials.
Klein’s photography won the Nadar Prize in 1956. Six years before he married Jeanne Florian.
Awards
- In 1988 he was awarded the culture prize of the German photography association
- In 1990 he received the International Prize of the Hasselblad Foundation.
