In Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta, many women (mostly elderly) are unjustly and arbitrarily accused of witchcraft by local witch doctors after a ceremony in which a chicken is sacrificed.

These women are cast out of society and forced to live alone in extreme poverty and terrible sadness.

These photos depict the famous “witches of Burkina” and their isolated living conditions, cut off even from their families, whom they are not allowed to see.
