Emilio Morenatti is a Spanish photographer with more than 30 years of experience, very committed to conflict. The newspaper EL MUNDO said that it was in permanent search of the conflict.
He made his first photos in 1988 for El newspaper del Guadalete, while finishing his studies in graphic design. Four years later, he started working for the EFE Agency, where he covers all kinds of national and international events. In 2003 he is hired by the American agency Associated Press. For them he portrays various armed confrontations, such as the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan or the conflict in the Middle East.
His photograph of a rocket leaving the Gaza Strip heading for Israel earned him an honorable mention in World Press Photo 2007. That same year he received the Pictures of the Year International (PoYI) award, one of the most recognized in the United States, and is a finalist – along with other Associated Press colleagues – for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize.
After losing part of a leg as a result of an insurgent attack, he establishes his new base in Barcelona, from where he continues to travel to cover international events, such as the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the different foci of the Arab Spring or, more recently, the refugee crisis in Europe. In 2013 he received the third World Press Photo award in the Contemporary Issues category for a photograph of the 29M general strike in Barcelona. He is currently Director of Photography of the Associated Press for Spain and Portugal and official coach of the World Press Photo.
