Alberto García Alix is a Spanish photographer. He won the Premio Nacional de Fotografía in 1999, García-Alix exhibited for the first time at the Buades Gallery in 1981. He is the brother of Carlos García-Alix, painter and writer, author of The Honor of the Insults ( 2007), full-length documentary about Felipe Sandoval.
His work toured several countries and is admired in publications such as Vogue, British Journal of Photography or Vanity Fair. They emphasize their portraits in black and white, with series dedicated to motorcycles, prisoners, porn stars, junkies and tattoos. Lover of motorcycles and portraits his cameras Leica and Hasselblad have immortalized important national and international artists. Motorcycles, tattoos, music and night have been some of his inspiration muses. Within his remarkable taste for portraiture, which he defines as a confrontation in which he usually stands frontamentally in front of his model, face to face was one of the most prominent protagonists of the so-called Movida from Madrid, having left familiar and powerful images of young people of this cultural movement – some of which are among his friends – that have subsequently become prestigious personalities in different fields: Pedro Almodóvar, Rossy de Palma, Emma Suarez, Camarón de la Isla and many others.
Also common are his portraits of direct nudes and violently devoid of all modesty, even over-acted, but of an expressive force and an unquestionable graphic and photographic effectiveness.
Although he has devoted himself throughout his career to photography, clearly recognizable and framed in the area of black and white and the field of social and personal document, since his long stays in France and China in 2007 and 2008, he has made a surprising foray into the video to document his images accompanied by his voice and his own texts. A good example of this is the video that could be seen as another work during his exhibition De donde no se vuelve (2008) at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
