Catalá Roca He was and still is one of the great Spanish photographers. He is an essential author when it comes to understanding documentary in Spain. His works cover subjects as varied as natural landscape, urban landscape, artistic documentation and ethnographic documentation.
He was born on March 19 in Valls, Tarragona, Spain and with only 13 years of age he started in the world of photography in the photographic studio of his father Pere Catalá Pic. He opened his own studio in 1947, dedicating himself mainly to work in the field of industrial photography and illustration.
He made his first solo exhibition at the Sala Caralt in Barcelona (1953), showing that the following year it was exhibited at the Nebli gallery in Madrid.
It is worth highlighting their collaboration in various magazines, assiduously doing so in the weekly magazine and with the group of architects “Grup R”. His photographs cover all subjects, from the natural and urban landscape to the artistic and ethnographic documentation; being published in numerous monographs.
In 1951 he received the City of Barcelona award, in the category of photographer and in 1952 in photography. One of the most recent tributes is the one he has dedicated in his memory “The Photographic Spring of Barcelona 1998”.
He made numerous exhibitions, showing his work in countries such as the United States, Asia and Europe, highlighting the retrospective carried out in his hometown, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Tarragona in 1998.
